What is Adrenal Fatigue?
Adrenal fatigue is a chronic, disabling state of fatigue that has been ongoing for several months. Some common symptoms of adrenal fatigue include:
- Fatigue
- Body aches
- Exhaustion
- Low energy
- Decreased libido
- Craving for salty snacks or sweets
- Sleep disturbances
- Low blood pressure
What causes adrenal fatigue?
The adrenal glands rest on your kidneys and produce many very important hormones. Cortisol is one of these hormones that helps regulate your blood sugar, immune system, and metabolism. When you experience prolonged stress, the adrenal glands continue to make cortidol instead of other essential hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone which lead to adrenal fatigue. Additionally, adrenal fatigue can result in fluid and electrolyte imbalances; heart and cardiovascular system imbalances; and carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism imbalances.
How can adrenal fatigue be treated?
Dr. Michele Zormeier can develop a plan with you and your health goads in mind. This plan will include salivary testing to help determine your cortisol levels. A nutritional plan involving vitamins, minerals, and adaptogens to help rebuild your adrenal system. Your customized plan may additionally include recommended dietary changes, nutritional testing and a gastrointestinal evaluation.
Adrenal fatigue may be a symptom of other biochemical imbalances in the body. These imbalances often include sex hormone imbalances including estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and insulin. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) may be recommended to counteract these imbalances. By treating both the adrenal gland dysfunction and hormonal imbalances, the body can safely and easily recover from these debilitating symptoms.
