Mistakes to Avoid After Your Liposuction Procedure

Mistakes to Avoid After Your Liposuction Procedure | Zormeier Cosmetic Surgery & Longevity Center

If you have pockets of fat you just can’t get rid of, no matter how much you exercise or diet, liposuction is one of the best options available. With the different kinds of liposuction available, you can get the benefits of the procedure even if you don’t want to go through invasive treatment.  At Zormeier Cosmetic Surgery & Longevity Center, we offer laser liposuction and Vaser liposuction to help you get the results you want. But what is liposuction, and what common mistakes should you avoid after the procedure?

Laser Liposuction: A Minimally Invasive Option

What is liposuction? It involves the process of removing fat deposits under the skin. The traditional type of liposuction is a surgical procedure that is effective but might not be suitable for everyone.

We offer Smart Lipo, a liposuction procedure that uses lasers to get the job done. Also called laser lipolysis or laser liposuction, it uses laser energy to get rid of excess fat in areas of the body that include:

  • Calves
  • Abdomen
  • Hips
  • Butt
  • Flanks
  • Back
  • Neck
  • Upper arms
  • Thighs

During this procedure, we insert a very small tube into the treatment area, allowing thermal energy to flow under the skin. This thermal energy breaks down fat cells, which are more susceptible to heat, without damaging other tissues. We can then remove the fat via the tube.

Laser liposuction can be an excellent option for those who do not want to undergo a more invasive traditional liposuction procedure. If you are not healthy enough for surgery or do not want to worry about a long recovery process, a laser liposuction procedure can be the right alternative. It can also be a good way of tightening the skin in the treatment area. The thermal energy also stimulates the creation of collagen, helping you get a tauter look.

Vaser Liposuction: Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction

Vaser liposuction is another option if you want to get rid of fat deposits without going through surgery. This option uses ultrasound technology to break up fat cells, making it easier to remove them during the procedure. It also uses a saline solution that helps expand the fat cells and make them easier to target.

Vaser liposuction can offer very controlled and precise treatment, making it easier to treat even the smallest pockets of fat. As with other types of liposuction, Vaser liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, so it is important to be close to your target weight and maintain a healthy diet and exercise regimen. The results of Vaser and other liposuction options are permanent, though new fat cells can appear if you gain weight.

Avoiding Common Mistakes During Liposuction Recovery

To help yourself heal after laser or Vaser liposuction, there are some mistakes you should avoid.

Expecting Results to Be Permanent Without Effort

Although the fat cells removed during liposuction are gone for good, don’t expect liposuction results to remain if you don’t exercise and eat healthy meals. If you gain weight, fat cells can once again reappear. Laser liposuction and Vaser liposuction are not weight-loss procedures — they help you eliminate fat pockets that may affect your overall look. Without exercising and eating correctly, liposuction results can be undone.

Drinking Alcohol or Taking Blood Thinners

Other liposuction recovery mistakes to avoid are taking blood-thinning medications and drinking alcohol right after the procedure. Many people assume they can have a drink to celebrate, but that is not a good idea. Both blood thinners and alcohol can make the healing process more difficult and even affect liposuction results.

Performing Strenuous Activities or Being Inactive

Don’t do anything too strenuous right after the procedure since this can also delay the healing process. You should especially avoid lifting weights since that can put a huge strain on the incision sites. Strenuous exercise can also raise your blood pressure, which can be a concern right after this type of procedure. However, you shouldn’t be inactive, either. You should walk around to keep your blood circulating so that the incision can heal more rapidly.

Not Drinking Enough Water

It is crucial that you stay hydrated. Drinking water not only helps you heal faster but also allows your body to flush out the anesthetics you receive during the procedure. You will also want to replenish any of the fluids you may have lost during the procedure.

Taking Baths

Taking a long bath after the procedure can be tempting, but that’s also not a good idea. Baths can make it easier for bacteria to set in at the incision site. Even if you have a waterproof bandage, you should wait a few weeks for long baths. You can shower right after laser or Vaser liposuction, but you should skip very hot showers. Stick with warm showers instead, and use antibacterial soap.

Not Using the Compression Garment

After a liposuction procedure, you need to wear a compression garment to speed up the healing process. It can help you avoid any fluid buildup after this type of procedure. When we remove the fat from between your skin and muscle, it takes the skin a bit of time to attach to the muscle. That gap makes it easier for fluid to collect, but a compression garment helps prevent this issue.

Not Eating Healthy Meals

You need to give your body the nutrients it needs to heal more rapidly after liposuction, and that can only happen if you choose healthy foods. Go for lean protein, vegetables, and fruits, and limit your sugar intake.
