What Is Water Jet-Assisted Liposuction?

Liposuction has been used for decades to reduce unwanted body fat, as well as address other health-related concerns, but today, lipo sculpting is better than ever. Water jet-assisted liposuction is an improved technique that can help everyone in Norcal reach their aesthetic goals faster and more easily than ever before. At Zormeier Cosmetic Surgery & Longevity Center in Noblesville, IN, Shelbyville, IN, Danville, IL, Healdsburg, CA, and Ukiah, CA, we help everyone in Northern California and beyond with this innovative technique. Today, we’re explaining what this type of liposuction is and what it can do.

What Is WaterJet-Assisted Liposuction?

Waterjet-assisted liposuction is an alternative technique that uses a spray of water to separate the fat from the surrounding tissues during the liposuction session. This fan-shaped water spray gently separates the tissues, which means the entire technique is less traumatic for the body than traditional liposuction. It also allows us to be more precise and versatile in our technique.

Why This Lipo Sculpting Method Is Different (and Better)

What makes this method of liposuction so much better? This particular treatment method has become very popular in recent years, in Northern CA and beyond, for a number of reasons, most especially the range of concerns that can be addressed because it is so much more precise than traditional lipo sculpting. Some of its benefits over traditional lipo include:

It’s Not as Invasive

Liposuction is by definition a bit invasive. A cannula must be inserted into the body, and sometimes in multiple areas. Waterjet-assisted liposuction cuts down on the invasive nature of this procedure.

The first step is to use the water jet to separate fat from the surrounding tissues, and this means that in the next step, we can use a much smaller cannula to remove fat from the body. A smaller cannula equals less invasion, and a less traumatic experience all around.

It Offers Better Results

Traditional liposuction is capable of removing large amounts of fat, but because it’s harder for traditional lipo to be precise, it is possible for the end result to look a bit lumpy or uneven. Sometimes this has nothing to do with the skill of the provider at the moment: it’s just the way body fat settles once the procedure is over.

This new technique allows for a much greater position and targeting, which means that the results look more natural and even.

It’s More Comfortable

Anything that is less invasive will by definition also be less painful and have a shorter recovery period. The larger cannula used in traditional procedures is simply blunter as a force and moves things around more than a smaller cannula would. Because waterjet-assisted lipo is more precise, there is less bruising, less trauma to the body, and greater comfort throughout.

How It Works

This treatment can be accomplished in as little as 90 minutes for most people. It does require the use of anesthesia, but it is just as simple as traditional liposuction to perform; in fact, in some ways, it is more simple, yet produces better results. Here are the steps involved:

Consultation

As with any cosmetic surgery, it’s very important to attend a consultation to find out if you are a good candidate. During the consultation, we will talk about your concerns and goals, evaluate your treatment areas, and go over your medical history and list of medications and supplements.

This will allow us to determine if you are a candidate for this type of liposuction. In general, anyone in Northern California who wants to get rid of body fat is likely to qualify as long as they are generally in good health.

Preparation

No special preparation is required for this treatment other than what would normally be required for traditional liposuction. You will need to stop taking any blood-thinning medications or supplements for 5 to 7 days before your appointment and abstain from alcohol and tobacco for 48 hours prior to your liposuction treatment. It may also help you to take some Arnica Montana prior to treatment to ensure a minimum amount of swelling.

As with any similar procedure, it’s a good idea to allow yourself a few days to rest and recover afterward. For the first few days, it will be good if you don’t have to worry too much about cooking, cleaning, child care, or looking after pets. If you’re able to, have someone in to help with these things.

Consider cooking meals in advance that you can warm up in a microwave or oven so that you can concentrate on relaxing for a few days. Recovering from your lipo may actually be a very helpful way to build some much-needed “me” time into your life.

On the Day

We will administer either general anesthesia or sedatives with local anesthesia so that you are comfortable throughout your treatment. We will make a few, small, targeted incisions, and the precise number of incisions and their location will depend on what area of the body you’re having treated and how much fat is being removed.

After the Procedure

Immediately after your procedure, we will monitor you to make sure you are reacting well to the anesthesia and waking up as you should. You should arrange for someone to pick you up and take you home, and you should rest for the first 24 hours, especially. Plan on sleeping any time you feel tired. Depending on how much fat has been removed, we may have you wear some compression garments for a while.

Recovery Process

Most people are back to their regular activities and schedule in just 5 to 10 days, depending on what areas of the body have been treated and how much fat has been removed. You should be able to return even to moderate exercise by 2 to 4 weeks after your treatment, but we will schedule some follow-up appointments so that we can keep track of how you’re doing.

When Will I See Results?

The fat that is removed from your body is gone forever. Your body cannot regenerate new fat cells, except in the case of the most extreme weight gain. However, your body will naturally react to the liposuction procedure by increasing swelling in the area, which will mask fat loss for a time. This is perfectly normal and is a healthy body response to lipo sculpting.

If you have only a small amount of fat removed, you will see your final results more quickly than if you have a large amount removed. The same may be true if you have a particularly high metabolism. Most people see their final results 1 to 3 months after treatment.

Are the Results Permanent?

Because fat cells cannot regenerate, this is a permanent treatment. However, it is important to remember that the fat cells that have been left behind can still expand with overeating. That said, those who take steps to enjoy a healthy lifestyle that includes a good diet, plenty of sleep, and enough exercise can expect to enjoy the results for life.

How Much Weight Can I Lose?

This treatment is not designed to help with significant weight loss. Instead, it’s a way to sculpt your body once you have gotten close to your goals or to address pockets of stubborn fat that refused to respond to your diet and exercise program.

Most people lose between 2 to 5 pounds of body fat, but because the loss is so targeted, this can result in a dramatic change in size. This amount of fat loss can equate to going down two pant sizes.

Who Are Good Candidates?

Anyone who would qualify for traditional liposuction will also qualify for this technique, but because this procedure is more versatile and less traumatic to the body, there are some people who can qualify for it who may not qualify for traditional Lipo. Some people, for example, cannot have traditional liposuction because of scarring, but for some in this category, waterjet-assisted lipo is fine.
