Facial Scar Revision: Discover The Right Type For Your Scar Treatment

Facial Scar Revision

When the skin has been damaged by a burn, surgery, an accident or acne, scarring forms during the healing process when more than one layer of skin has been impacted. Once the scar has formed, it becomes permanent. In many cases, surgery can be used to relocate the scar or make it less visible. Almost everyone is uncomfortable with regards to facial scars. Sometimes this type of scar can diminish the functions of the eyes, nose, and mouth. The best option is usually the procedure of facial scar revision surgery. It is important the expectations of the individual remain realistic and the process is clearly understood.

The Specifics of Facial Scar Revision

Contracture type scars usually require the removal of the entire scar tissue. A new incision line is formed using skin flaps made of unscarred, healthy and adjacent skin. These flaps are simply lifted and moved to form the new line. A skin graft is often used when it is not possible to use a skin flap. During a skin graft, one section of skin tissue is removed from a selected area and attached another area. It is necessary to allow enough time for new soft tissue and blood vessels to form.

Another type of facial scar revision involves relocating the scar to another area such as a natural crease or fold in the skin to make the scar less visible. This will not remove the scar, it simply makes it less visible. Laser resurfacing and dermabrasion are used to decrease the prominence of elevated or rough scars by removing a portion of the upper skin layers with a laser light or an abrading tool. The scar is not removed but it is less visible and smoother.

The Different Types of Scars

The type of treatment used is dependent on the specific scar. Severe burns often heal in a puckered way and impact the contracting movement of the tendons and muscles. Keloid scars are caused by an overproduction of collagen once the wound has already healed. Hypertrophic scars have a raised, thick texture that can restrict the movement of the tendons and muscles with an unsightly appearance. Some scars have a negative impact on the aesthetics of the face while others impact facial expressions. The type of facial scar revision used will depend on the type of scar.
