What is stem cell therapy?
Stem cell therapy is a branch of medicine where the healing potential of your own body is harnessed and applied. Stem cells are taken from one location of the body (fat tissue) and are then relocated to an area of disease, injury, or inflammation. Stem cells exist within our body and are responsible for maintaining and repairing tissue when damaged. However, certain tissues do not have direct access to stem cells. Stem cell therapy, therefore, is harvesting stem cells from where they exist in abundance and applying them to an area of need within the body.
What are the benefits of stem cell therapy?
Traditional medicine treats symptoms of disease and dysfunction with drugs and surgery, but does not address the cause. Stem cell therapy is designed to heal the source of the problem, instead of masking the symptoms. Stem cell therapy has the ability to regenerate damaged tissue. This leads to long-term relief of symptoms and restoration of function.
How is stem cell therapy performed?
Our clinic performs a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure in 2-3 hours. We isolate a patient’s own stem cells from their adipose (fat) tissue and immediately deliver those cells back into the patient. This is all done under local anesthetic with minimal discomfort.
How long will recovery from the procedure take?
Our procedure is minimally invasive and most patients walk out within 2-3 hours. Recovery is very quick. The incision is small and do not require stitches. There are usually no restriction in resuming normal activity, but some patient’s do experience soreness for a few days.
Actual recovery in the area of the stem cells can take up to 6 weeks. Your body will begin a healing process which takes time. Dr. Zormeier continues to track progress for many months after the procedure.
Stem cell? I thought those were from a fetus?
Our procedure uses a patient’s own stem cells derived from their own adipose (fat) tissue. We do not perform any procedures or undertake research using embryonic stem cells, which is the source of most ethical scrutiny.
Are there any side effects to stem cell therapy?
Side effects are typically minimal and can include minor pain and irritation at the injection site. Since we are using a patient’s own stem cells, chances of immune system rejection are virtually zero.
How long will my stem cell results last?
Since stem cell therapy taps into your body’s own healing ability, the results can be long lasting and permanent. Initial improvements can be evident within the first few weeks and continue throughout the healing process. According to some published studies, patients have continued to show improvements from 6 months to one year.
